Answers to Some of the Most Common Self-Publishing Questions

PUBLISHING


How do I submit a book?

You submit a book by agreeing to our contract, filling out our submission form, choosing the service you desire, paying by credit card, and uploading your manuscript to us. Alternatively, you can print out our submission form, and agreement sign and fill them out, and mail them along with payment and your book either on a floppy disk or CD.

What types of books do you accept?

We accept all types of books except hard-core pornography and hate material. Everything we publish is well-written and is of interest to someone whether that's a large audience or a small one. Although we're very open minded, we do reserve the right to reject any book that we find offensive.

Who owns the copyright on my book?

Your book is yours, and we will claim the copyright of the book in your name on the Copyright page. You may also want to register the copyright with the United States Copyright Office. This can be done by going to www.copyright.gov or, if you prefer, we can do this for you with our Copyright Registration service.

Why do I need an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)?

You need ISBNs because all book databases and all bookstores and libraries use these numbers to keep track of their books. If your book doesn't have one, you will only be able to sell it to individuals. A new ISBN is issued for every new book that's reproduced. If the title, publisher, author, publication date, or format is changed, a new number is issued. That means you need a different ISBN for an eBook and a print book.

Why do I need a Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN)?

Librarians can only add books to their collections if they have already been set up to be catalogued. The LCCN enables libraries to catalogue your book, and that means libraries can buy copies.

What formats are acceptable for manuscript submissions?

We accept docx, doc, rtf, wpd, odf, pdf, and most other formats. Contact us if you're not sure.

What if I'm using a Mac?

Generally, there is no problem if you are using a Mac versus a PC, as long as you submit the file in one of our accepted file formats. If you are unsure, please contact us.

How long will it take for my book to be ready?

Our first step is to provide you with a Rough Format. This shows you the fonts and layout we’ve selected for you to choose from. Next, you’ll receive a fully formatted copy. You will proof it and make changes where there are typographical or editorial errors. Once you approve the formatting, the project will go to cover design. This can (but doesn't always) take another six weeks. After you've approved the cover, the book will be checked in-house and submitted to the printer. You will then receive a physical proof (a printed copy of the book) to verify that it is ready for print. The whole process usually takes from twelve to fourteen weeks unless editing is involved. In that case, add another four to six weeks to the production time.

What will my book look like when it's finished?

If your book is paperback, it will be printed double-sided on high quality, creme or white paper (depending on the size) with a full-color, perfect bound, laminated paperback cover that can be matte or gloss finished. The quality is on a par with the Trade Paperback books you see in bookstores. Hardcover books are available in two forms: laminated full-color hardcover or cloth-bound hardcover with full-color dustjacket. Are there any hidden costs?

No, we don't keep anything hidden. Everything necessary to get your book into distribution is included in the publishing packages: ISBN, LCCN, EAN, barcode, formatting and layout, up to twenty-five pictures or images, original (or custom) cover design, worldwide distribution, a dedicated webpage on our site, and one-on-one personal service by an experienced publishing team. The only time additional costs would be incurred are 1) if you want us to create an index or other special formatting; 2) for revisions that you ask us to do beyond those included in the publishing; 3) if your publishing package includes Ingram distribution, there is a yearly maintenance fee of $24/year that is required to keep the book up on the Ingram database after the initial three years.

DISTRIBUTION


What is the difference between Amazon and Ingram distribution?

Both Amazon and Ingram provide worldwide distribution, but there is a difference. Amazon’s distribution is online, and books are sold directly to readers. Amazon is a retailer. Ingram, on the other hand, is a wholesaler. This means that books listed on Ingram will be available to Amazon as well as thousands of additional retailers. Books listed on Ingram will be distributed to libraries, bookstores, and other retailers both online and off, who in turn will sell the books to individuals who want to read them.

Can bookstores order my book?

If you choose our optional distribution through Ingram, the largest book distributor in the United States, bookstores can order your book through them. Ingram usually buys books from publishers at a 55% discount. We can lower this if you’re not planning to try and sell to bookstores, but if you are going after bookstore sales, you will need a 55% distributor discount and you will also need to make the book returnable.

Where does Ingram distribute books?

Ingram is the largest book distributor in the world, and all books set up with Ingram distribution are made available in the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, and Australia.

PRICING


Who sets the price on my book?

We decide what the price of your book should be based on the cost of production and the distributor discount. We also look at similar works and try to keep the price as competitive as possible.

What is a Distributor Discount and how does it affect the price of my book?

A distributor is a company that makes books available to individuals and booksellers. As the middleman, they get a percentage of the book sale.  The traditional distributor discount is 55%.  For sales to brick and mortar bookstores, it’s important to set a 55% distributor discount, so that the bookseller can get the 40% they’ve always gotten. The higher the discount, the higher the price of your book.

What is the cost for author's copies?

Because Breezeway is going to set you up as the publisher of your book (even though the imprint will be Breezeway, Llumina, or any name you choose), you will be able to buy books at the lowest possible cost:  The publisher wholesale cost.  Whether you buy one book or 200, the cost will be lower than you expect.  The only better pricing you could get is if you were to print your book in large quantities (1000 or more) on an offset run.

ROYALTIES


When and how do I get paid?

It depends on the distributor.  Amazon pays every other month; Ingram pays every four months. 

How much royalties will I make on my book?

Breezeway bases royalties on the list price of the book, a much larger number than the net price often used by publishing companies. Our royalties are 30% of list for books sold through the Breezeway site or over our phones, and 10% of list on books sold through third parties like Amazon or Ingram. So if a book lists for $15, the royalties would be $4.50 for books sold directly through Breezeway to the consumer and $1.50 for books sold through a distributor.

Compare this to royalties based on net: If you have a $15 book with a 40% discount, then a net royalty would be calculated as follows: $15 – 40% (distributor discount) = $9 - $5.10 (cost of printing) = $3.90 (net on which royalty is based). 3.90 x 20% =$.78. So the 20% royalty based on net for a $15 book is $.78. Compare this to $1.50 on a book with a royalty that is 10% of list price.

MARKETING


Why do I need to market my book?

There are over 12 million books on Amazon. If you don’t want yours to get lost in the sheer volume of what’s available, you have to take steps to promote it and draw attention to it. This is what marketing is for, and unless you want your book to disappear, you have to work at it.

When should I start marketing my book?

You can’t really start marketing until you have a book in hand, but you can spend the time during production of the book to think about and plan the steps you’ll take to market your book. While your book is in production, you can explore the options and come up with strategies that will work for you. Not all of us can do workshops, but some can. Not all are good at social media, but others are. Think about what you can and are willing to do, and then start putting together your marketing plan. At Breezeway, we’ll help with this.

What is a Press Release?

When something happens that is newsworthy, companies let the world know by sending out press releases. Since the publishing of a new book can be newsworthy, a press release can be created to announce that information to the world. A press release usually includes a “hook” (something that ties the book to what’s currently going on in the world), and then information about the book and the author.

What does social media have to do with marketing?

Social media are today’s multi-level marketing. If you can get the attention of potential readers, they will help you get the word out on your book. Social media is “word of mouth” in the information age. Send out your message in ways that will be shared by others and your message can grow wings.

PRINTING


What is Print-on-Demand (POD)?

Print-on-Demand is exactly what it sound like: the ability to print a book “on demand.” In the POD world, an order is a demand. So Print-on-Demand is the ability to print a book when ordered in whatever quantities are ordered.

How do I know if Offset printing is right for my book?

POD has two main advantages: the ability to print only as many books as are ordered and the ability to store a book inside a computer rather than in boxes, which take up large amounts of storage space. But because POD is based on printing, packaging, and shipping orders as small as one book at a time, it is, of necessity, more expensive per book than offset printing. Offset printing costs more upfront, but the cost per book is lower than POD. Is it right for your book? Do you think you can sell a run of a thousand or more books? If you can, then offset printing is the better choice.

What kind of color variations can I expect?

Print runs, like dye runs, are consistent throughout the run, but there can be color variations on the next run. So, if you printed 1000 books, you could expect the color to be the same on all copies, but on a second run, the color might be slightly different. The same happens in POD printing, but runs can be as small as a single book. So when printing POD, you can expect slight color variations from one book to the next. Blue will still be blue and green will be green, but the shades might be a little different.

EDITING


Does my book have to be edited?

At Breezeway, we like to produce quality books. In addition, it's a competitive market with over 5 million books on Amazon, and selling a book that's hard to read due to errors that create choppy content will have more trouble than those that are smooth sailing. All books should be well-written and professionally edited. This will help you in the long run when you get into promoting the book. And it will prevent embarrassment.

Where can I find editing services?

There are many editors available online, but unless you’re an editor yourself, it’s hard to know who’s good and who’s not. Breezeway does a free editing assessment, so you can see what type of work your book needs. You can trust Breezeway's editors to help you polish your work.

What is an Edit Assessment, and why does Breezeway offer it free?

Almost all books need editing of some kind. Even PhDs require copyediting to make sure that typos are caught and punctuation corrected. We can’t know how much work your manuscript needs without actually looking at the writing, so we have an editor assess your work and see what needs to be done. Breezeway offers this for free because we feel it’s essential that every writer have it done. We don’t want you to publish a book that still needs work, which may prove an embarrassment to you later on.

FORMATTING / INTERIOR DESIGN


Do I have to setup the text in any way?

You do not need to setup the file, except for the following: 1) Make sure that all the chapter breaks are clearly marked and the chapter titles are bold. 2) Send your work to us in an easy-to-read font like Times New Roman (10-12 point), Bookman, or Arial. 3) Send us one MS WORD file (or other word processing file) containing all the chapters. 4) Do not use hard returns except at the ends of paragraphs. 5) Indent paragraphs by using the Tab key, not the space bar. 6) Do not manually hyphenate words at the ends of lines. Let your word processor do it, or don't do it at all and we'll do it. 7) Do not put double spaces between paragraphs unless there is a scene break. 8) Don't put in any section breaks. 9) Do not insert any hidden codes.

Should I put in page numbers manually?

Don’t put in page numbers manually. This creates a lot of work for our typesetting department because what is input manually has to be taken out manually. It's best if you send the book without numbers and let us insert them after the formatting is done.

What about interior graphics?

As long as your artwork is high-resolution and on a disk or embedded in your file, there's no problem and there's no extra charge for those included in your package. If we have to scan the pictures in, then the charge is $5 per picture. If you'd like to add more pictures than what is included with your publishing, there is an additional charge of $5 per image for the additional formatting time required to handle pictures. High resolution images must be at least 300dpi at full print size. Smaller images cannot be sized up without losing resolution. Authors must have permission or the legal right to use the graphics that are submitted.

COVER DESIGN


Can I submit ideas or images?

You can absolutely submit ideas and images. In fact, we encourage it! This is your book and no one knows better than you what kind of cover will attract your readers. You are welcome to send samples, sketches, or even images or illustrations to use directly on your cover. If you would like to use specific images on your cover for print, please make sure they are high resolution. High resolution images must be at least 300dpi at full print size. Smaller images cannot be sized up without losing resolution. Authors must have permission or the legal right to use the graphics that are submitted.

Should I want to print the price on the back of the cover?

All that's required is a barcode with ISBN and EAN information, so you don't have to print the price on the cover, and we leave that up to you. Most often, we don’t print the price on the cover for two reasons: 1) This allows you to sell your books for whatever price you want and 2) it allows us to change the pricing without having to do a cover revision.

What is the difference between Custom and Custom Plus cover designs?

All Breezeway book covers are original designs and are not template-based. A Custom cover design uses 1-2 images that are either in the public domain, stock images, or supplied by the author and will only be minimally altered during the design process. If you want us to use more than two images on the front cover or ones that we have to research and/or manipulate, then you want a Custom Plus Cover Design, and there is an additional cost for that if it is not included in your publishing package. All of our cover designs are unique to each book and have a powerful, professional look.

Can I have an original illustration drawn or original photo taken for my cover?

Absolutely. But the original cover design included in our packages is only a design, created from images that are already in existence. For more information on illustrations or original photography, contact us at (866) 229-9244.
